Participation in the workshop Women’s Representation in Media

Representatives of the technical services of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) participated, at the invitation of the Turkish regulator (RTUK), at the workshop titled Women’s Representation in Media, which was held in Ankara on 28 February 2025. The workshop was organised with the participation of representatives of regulatory authorities from Azerbaijan, Albania and Greece, as well as other stakeholders, including representatives of the academic community, media workers, well as local NGOs.

The aim of the workshop was to exchange experiences in the development of recommendations and proposals for improving the representation of women in media, with an emphasis on providing more equitable, balanced and efficient reporting. A special focus was on reporting on the issues of violence, both in electronic media and in the digital environment. Cooperation between regulatory authorities and other stakeholders was aimed at identifying solutions to challenges that arise in the context of media representation of sensitive and complex topics.

During the workshop, the issues related to the efficiency of existing regulations and laws were discussed, as well as the need for their amendment. The manner in which cultural patterns and social stereotypes affect the representation of women in media was also discussed. Special attention was paid to the role of media institutions in the prevention of digital violence, with the aim of putting in place more efficient mechanisms for the protection of women in the digital space.

This workshop is one of a number of activities in which REM participates as a partner of the Turkish regulator, continuing its engagement in strengthening cooperation and exchange of knowledge in the field of media regulation and protection of women's rights.
