This year's Media Literacy Days dedicated to the safe, responsible and critical use of digital platforms
The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media marked the fifth consecutive Open Days of Media Literacy from 5 to 9 October 2026, with a series of activities aimed at strengthening the media literacy of preschoolers, developing skills for the safe, responsible, and critical use of digital platforms among young people, and devoted special attention to issues of youth safety online.
Within the Open Days of Media Literacy for the youngest, activities were organised as part of the Media Doors Wide Open campaign, which was joined this year by Radio Television of Serbia, Radio Television of Vojvodina, PE Transmitters and Communications, NAXI Radio, RTV Pančevo, and members of the RAB Srbija Association of Radio Stations from the following cities: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica, Pančevo, Kikinda, and Knjaževac.
Preschoolers from these cities had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the work of the media, get an insight into the world of journalism, learn about other professions within the media, and understand how they function. A special part of the programme consisted of workshops held at the Avala Tower, organised by PE Transmitters and Communications, where children of even younger ages, as digital natives, became acquainted with devices and audiovisual means from the analogue era and the ways people used to communicate, listen to music, and use the media. Retro exhibits, provided for this activity in cooperation with the Yandex Museum, brought the development of media and technology closer to the youngest in an interesting and direct manner.
This year, for the students of upper grades of primary schools and secondary schools, the Strengthening the Digital Resilience of Young People workshop was organised for the first time in cooperation with Radio Television of Vojvodina and the 8th Belgrade Grammar School. The workshop was dedicated to strengthening the media and digital literacy of young people, with a special focus on developing skills that enable children and young people to use digital platforms and content safely, responsibly, and critically.
The holding of the workshops was supported by the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), as part of the implementation of the Youth Policy Lab on Disinformation and Media Literacy, Western Balkans – WBYL2) project. Through an interactive approach, non-formal educational techniques, and peer support, workshop participants had the opportunity to discuss the challenges they encounter daily in the digital environment. During the workshops, ways to recognise potential risks and responsible use digital technologies were discussed. Special emphasis was placed on the need for young people to develop, alongside technical skills, the ability to think critically about the content they follow, share, and use.
In cooperation with representatives of the Ministry of the Interior – Service for Combating Cyber Crime, the Media Literacy Team held a lecture on the topic of Internet Security and the Development of Critical Thinking among Children and Young People in the Digital Environment at the premises of the Criminal Police University, with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Lecture participants, representatives of primary and secondary schools, had the opportunity to hear practical advice on cyber security, with a special focus on the development of media literacy and critical thinking as a preventive measure for the benefit of young people in the digital environment. Some of the topics covered in the lecture included cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, and manipulation through fake identities, which often begin through seemingly harmless interactions and escalate into serious forms of abuse, along with the misuse of artificial intelligence.
A special part of the lecture was dedicated to the survey results presented by the Regulator regarding young people in the digital environment. Practical tools for working with children and young people to raise awareness of media literacy were also presented, and concrete advice was given for their greater internet safety, such as reporting via the website www.sajberstraza.gov.rs.
By marking the Open Days of Media Literacy, REM continues to contribute to empowering and strengthening the media literacy of children and youth, who should become informed, critical, and responsible users of media and digital technologies.
